National Qualifications (whether Apprenticeships or Traineeship programmes) are made up of unit standards. A certain number of unit standards must be completed to gain each qualification.

Each unit standard:

- Describes the skills and knowledge needed in a particular part of a job.
- Earns a certain number of credits or points towards a qualification.

Unit standard credits are useful by themselves, because they show exactly what an employee can do.
